W is for Whimsy

Image

Whimsy is not my expertise. I write heavy, sometimes dark, and always controversial. So how can I give my readers a breather between these scenes? The answer is with some humor or whimsy. The problem for me is I don’t have a funny bone in my body. The last comedian I thought was funny was Bill Cosby.

Now it is your turn. I have been giving you tips from A-V. Please readers, tell me how to come up with humorous lines to lighten the load. I have one line in my WIP. “She tried to do a hair-flip, but it came across more like a neck spasm.”  Funny?  Not really. That’s it.  My characters are in serious problems. I don’t want to make light of it. I have controversial subjects like gay marriage, gun control and prejudice in my story. How the heck to I put whimsy into that?

Help please.

  1. well after leaving the store today and seeing two women laughing like crazy because one had just peed her pants, there was nothing more for them to due but laugh…. finding Hummer in the uncomfortable situations we get our selves in…She tossed her hair back and hair strands clung to her lips as they pressed into her freshly applied red lipstick without her acknowledgement of it as she took a bite of her ice cream and admired the man across from her, her first date, she wanted to make a great impression… I hope he notices my white teeth next to my red lipstick…. little did she know she was eating her own hair, with a hint of summer red lipstick as she took a bite …. I don’t know… I’m not a writer 🙂 but I do love whimsy…and finding the “uncomfortable” that we all deal with every day and making that “light” is a bit of whimsy. Good luck 🙂
